Frequently Asked Questions Who Plays? We have a membership of around 25, both ladies and men, with ages ranging from 18 to over 60. Abilities are varied - some of our players play in the Whitefield & District League, others just enjoy playing club night. Games often feature players of varying standards and abilities, but we strive to ensure that these games are nevertheless competitive to allow enjoyment for all concerned. Is There A Minimum Standard? We are an informal club, and while we have coaches within our ranks, we are currently unable to accept beginners. We therefore ask for a minimum standard where players have enough experience that they can serve consistently and are familiar with the rules. Do You Play Singles Or Doubles? We play doubles, both mixed and levels, meaning that more people get to play (and they don't have to be quite so fit!) Occasionally there is a chance for people to play singles, but only when there is a spare court and no one else is sitting off. What Type Of Shuttles Do You Use? We only use feather shuttles. Please do not feel daunted if you've never used them before - they are slightly different to plastic shuttles, but are easy to get used to and allow a lot more control and feel. Do You Accept Juniors? Unfortunately, due to the ridiculous child protection regulations and bureaucracy forced upon us, we cannot accept anyone under the age of 16. Anyone between 16 and 18 should contact the club initially to dicuss the possibilities of membership. Is Everyone Really Serious? In a word, no! We're all there to enjoy badminton and help develop the game in the area. New members will be made to feel welcome and encouraged to improve. How Many Teams Do You Have? We have two teams playing in the Whitefield and District Badminton League: The 'A' Team plays in Division 2 and the 'B' Team in Division 3. We also have a newly promoted team in Division 1 of the Leigh League and a new team entered into Division 2 of the Rochdale Open League for the 2010/11 season. Will I Be Asked To Play For A Team? Team selection is a matter for the Match Secretary, and only registered members of the club are eligible to play for teams. It should also be noted that there is no requirement to play for a team - it is perfectly acceptable for someone to join as a social member only. What Equipment Do I Need? You will need a badminton racquet and suitable clothing (non-marking shoes and clothes suitable for running around in). Shuttles are provided by the club. How Much Does It Cost? Guest fees are currently £5 per week. Annual membership fees are £115 (payable in two installments if required) plus registration to Badminton England and the local leagues. In terms of value for money, it equates to just over £2 per week, which is a fraction of the cost to hire a court. Who Runs The Club? The first people to arrive on a Wednesday will just start playing. We do have a committee for the more mundane aspects of the club, although everyone is encouraged to help out wherever possible. The club is run as a non-profit making organisation - all fees only go towards covering costs. I'd Like To Give It A Go - What Do I Need To Do Next?
